The Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sports in Ireland

The Minister for Sport and Youth Affairs published The Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sports in Ireland, in 1996. The document provides administrators, coaches, and players with guidelines and standards to be used in dealing with young people in sport.
The code is designed to assist those who work with children in sport to do so in an ethical manner and to provide the basis for good practice. It is designed to cover all sporting activities involving children and young people up to 18 years of age. It is in the interest of everyone involved in children’s sport that the Code is used by all involved in children’s sport. Children, young people and their families should have every confidence that they are treated with respect and understanding when they take part in sport. The code of ethics provides administrators, coaches and players, with guidelines and standards to be used in dealing with young people in sport.

At South County Dublin Leisure Services Ltd, we recognise and value the importance of The Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sports in Ireland. Each user group is given a copy and asked to sign a document stating that they agree to be bound by the guidelines.

Responsibility for investigation of child abuse suspected or otherwise, lies with the Health Boards and the Gardai. It is not appropriate for individuals, clubs, sporting organisation etc. to carry out internal investigations into such cases.

At Tallaght Leisure Centre, any person who knows or suspects that a child is being harmed, or is at risk of harm, has a duty to convey this information to a senior member of staff. This information should be dealt with in accordance with the guidelines set out in the above code. All staff members are provided with a copy of The Code of Ethics & Good Practice for Children’s Sports in Ireland.
